As a lecturer, you guide students in their development into professionals and contribute to practice-oriented education and research.
But what do you actually need to possess to fulfil this role successfully?
A master's degree is a requirement to apply as a lecturer. This is clearly stated in our lecturer vacancies.
However, if you do not have a master's degree, do not hesitate to apply anyway.
It is also possible to take a master's degree after you have been hired.
You do not need a teaching qualification to apply as a lecturer However, you should be prepared to obtain a Basic Didactic Competence qualification (BDB) if you are working at Zuyd. This is in fact mandatory for all lecturers. This (internal) training will be started as soon as possible after starting employment.
The BDB is paid for by Zuyd and the hours fall within your working hours.
Besides bringing in your own knowledge and skills, it is important to teach your students to learn how to teach them. This requires certain soft skills. As professionals, students should have a number of interpersonal skills in their pocket. Think cooperation, giving feedback, presenting, negotiating, networking. Here too, you guide your students - and (some of) these soft skills are in your own pocket.
Keeping up to date in your profession requires a continuous look outside. What are the trends and developments in your field and in the work field? How can you translate these to the study programme? As an instructor, you not only help your students develop; you also help develop the education (programme). This can be done very concretely in a role as curriculum developer. But it is also important to be and stay up-to-date in your daily lessons.
In terms of content, it is of course a prerequisite that you bring expertise. Work experience in the profession or professional field in which you will be teaching is a hard selection requirement. Precisely this experience helps you to bring in current practical examples and discuss or brainstorm about them with your students.
In other words: to continuously establish the link between the study programme and professional practice.

Then, finally, it is important that you stand firm. You feel involved with your students and show that you are, but you must set boundaries in good time. Supervising students also means letting go in time and letting them discover things for themselves. In addition, the workload can be high, especially during peak periods. Good time management, making the right choices in the time you have and self-management, are very important.
At Zuyd, as a lecturer you are much more than just a teacher.
You fulfil various roles in which you inspire, guide and challenge students to get the best out of themselves.
This makes your work varied, challenging and incredibly valuable.
As a lecturer at Zuyd, you combine subject-specific knowledge with the power to inspire and guide others.
Do you have it in you?
